MILITARY authorities have been asked by the Economic Community of West Africa (Ecowas) Court of Justice to pay Nigerian soldier Barnabas Eli a sum of N10m as compensation for his dismissal for losing a rifle.
Back in 2012, Private Eli was dismissed from the Nigerian Army after he lost his rifle. In addition, he was sentenced to two years imprisonment by a court martial without recourse to the confirming authority before enforcement.

(1) Over the last week, we have had a lot of commentary about the government’s proposed 2020 budget. Personally, I see it as offering less than 10% of what is required. There is no way you can make $28bn work for 200m people. When the sums being invested in human development are so minuscule, it is clear that poverty will remain with us for the foreseeable future if we are expecting the government to be our messiah

(1) Receipts from oil revenue are estimated to to be $16bn in 2020 based on an output of 1.6m barrels a day selling at a price of $55 a barrel. Nigeria only receives about half of crude oil receipts due to joint venture agreements we have with our partners, so we will not rely on petroleum product prices to fund the budget
