Inec officially declares Governor Seyi Makinde as victorious and re-elected in Oyo State

NIGERIA'S Independent National Electoral Commission (Inec) has officially declared Governor Seyi Makinde of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of Saturday’s gubernatorial election and duly returned.

 

In what was essentially a two-horse race between the PDP and the All Progressives Congress (APC), Governor Makinde, won 31 out of the 33 local government areas in the state. According to Inec, he polled 563,756 votes to beat his closest rival Senator Teslim Folarin of APC, who scored 256,685 votes, while Adebayo Adelabu of Accord Party who came third, scored 38,357 votes.

 

Professor Adebayo Bamire, the vice chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, who acted as returning officer, declared that Governor Makinde defeated all other candidates to win the election. Senator Folarin only won in Irepo and Ore-lope local government areas but was comprehensively beaten elsewhere

 

Olusola Kehinde, the state returning officer, subsequently declared that having satisfied the requirement of the law, Governor Makinde  is declared winner of the poll. Senator Folarin is a three-term member of the National Assembly and Adebayo Adelabu is former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
