Anti-herdsmen campaigners protest outside London high commission as Buhari visits for Commonwealth summit

CAMPAIGNERS protesting against the ongoing killing of farmers by Fulani cattle herdsmen across Nigeria staged a demonstration outside the high commission in London today as President Muhammadu Buhari arrived in the UK for a Commonwealth summit.

Yesterday, President Buhari arrived in London where he is billed to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting scheduled to take place between April 16 and 20. After the meeting, he is expected to stay behind in London for an undisclosed amount of time to receive medical treatment for an undisclosed illness.

In the first drama of the visit though, protesters staged a demonstration outside the high commission in London, demanding resignation of the president over the herdsmen saga. They held aloft placards demanding the ending of the killings in Benue State and chanted "Buhari Must Go."

Looking like it was organised by Idoma and Tiv organisations in the UK, the demonstration expressed disgust at the Buhari administration's indifference to their plight. More than any other state in Nigeria, Benue has bore the brunt of Fulani herdsmen attacks as heavily-armed thugs have mounted bloody attacks on rural villages, often leaving dozens dead.

Benue community leaders have accused the security forces of either colluding with the herdsmen or turning a blind eye to their activities. President Buhari has been accused of showing little concern for their plight as he has not visited the affected areas, has not addressed the nation on the matter and never sends representatives to the funerals of the victims.
