Obi supporters oppose appointment of General Enenche to Labour's campaign team over his role in #EndSars

MEMBERS of Nigeria's Labour Party have expressed concern over the appointment of Retired Major General John Enenche on to the campaign team of its presidential candidate Peter Obi following his role in quashing the anti-Sars protests.

Yesterday, former Anambra State governor Peter Obi, who is flying the flag of the Labour Party in next year's presidential elections, announced a 1,234 campaign team. Among those listed as being members of the team was General Enenche, a former director of information at the Nigerian Defence Headquarters.

While serving in the Nigerian Army, General Enenche had claimed that photos and videos from the massacre at Lekki Tollgate during the protests on 2020, were photo-shopped. Back then, Nigerian youths took to the streets to protest against the brutality of the  disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (Sars) police unit but their protest was forcefully put down.

Governor Obi's supporters have taken to social media to insist that General Enenche is not worthy of any position on the campaign team due to his role in covering up the Lekki massacre in October 2020. At the time, General Enenche, said the report of soldiers shooting the protesters was mere allegations.

Labour Party members and supporters of Governor Obi have been calling for the immediate removal of the former army spokesperson and accused those in his support of being hypocrites. Some have also called on the former Nigerian Army spokesman apologise for the role he played during the protests.

One supporter said: “I am of the opinion that Major General John Enenche should be made to either tender a public apology for the role he played during the #EndSars struggle or be forced to resign. Anything else other than this is like spitting on the graves of those who lost their lives on 20:10:20."

Another added: “Major General John Enenche, who appears on the Labour Party presidential campaign committee (PCC) as representing the north central zone, once called the Lekki massacre photoshopped. His appointment, barely 10 days to the second anniversary of the Lekki massacre, should raise very serious concerns for everyone."

One supporter named Uzochi, added:  “My own beef with the Peter Obi PCC is the inclusion of General John Enenche. as much as his inclusion is strategic and might come with some weight, I won’t forget his role in the #EndSars massacre. He was the one who said DJ Switch’s IG live was photoshop. I can’t forgive that.”

Another member said: “General John Enenche whose name is number 18 on this PCC list denied that the Lekki massacre at the tollgate ever happened and that all the videos and pictures were photoshopped. Today he’s on the messiah list of the Labour Party. You must be an evil person to support Labour on this.”
