Everton initiate contract talks with Iwobi on offering him a new improved deal

SUPER Eagles playmaker Alex Iwobi has begun contract extension talks with Everton as the club are looking to tie him down to a new long term deal in recognition of his blistering form this season.

This season, Iwobi, 26, appears to have finally found his feet at Everton following his £40m move to Merseyside from Arsenal in 2019. After an initial rocky bedding in period, Iwobi has emerged as arguably Everton's best player this season, putting in brilliant performances week after week, impressing manager Frank Lampard significantly.

As a result, Mr Lampard and the club have opened contract negotiations with the player, given that Iwobi’s contract is set to expire at the end of next season. With the form the Super Eagles midfielder has shown in recent months, Everton is now looking to do everything possible to tie their man down for a few more years.

Iwobi has been a top performer for Everton since last season as he was important in the Toffees’ Premier League survival during the last campaign. This season, playing in a central midfield role, Iwobi has been massive for the Merseysiders, having a hand in four of their eight Premier goals.

His performances have drawn praise from his uncle former Nigeria international Jay Jay Okocha. Everton recognise the impact of the former Arsenal man and Mr Lampard has confirmed that the club wants to extend Iwobi’s contract.

Mr Lampard said: “Yes, I know that Thelwell’s speaking with Alex’s people on that front. We will see how that one develops.”
