Supreme Court strikes out suit demanding that PDP zones presidency to the southeast

PLANS by a former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential aspirant to get the courts to nullify the party's recent primaries and compel the leadership to zone the position to the southeast geo-political zone have failed after a court rejected the application.

Earlier today, in a unanimous judgment, Nigeria's Supreme Court struck out a suit seeking to compel the PDP to zone its presidential ticket to the southeast. In a judgment delivered by Justice Adamu Jauro, the court struck out the suit on the grounds that it lacked jurisdiction to entertain the suit.

Cosmos Ndukwe, a PDP presidential aspirant and former deputy speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, had filed the suit against his party. In his suit, he had prayed for an order to compel the PDP to uphold its zoning and rotational policy.

Mr Ndukwe, specifically, sought for order of the court to compel the PDP to zone the nomination of its presidential candidate to the southeast geo-political zone. However, Justice Jauro held that the suit was not justifiable on the grounds that the nomination of candidates for election was an internal affair for political parties.
