Oludare Olufunwa searches from new English club after being released by Southampton

NIGERIAN-born central defender Oludare Olufunwa is hoping to join another English Premier League or Championship side before the close of the current transfer window after just being released by Southampton.

Olufunwa, 20, was released by the Saints upon the expiry of his contract on June 30, leaving Southampton without making a Premier League appearance or being called up to the senior squad for a competitive game. However, he was often invited to train with the first team and participated in some pre-season friendlies.

An academy product, Olufunwa represented Southampton in the U18 Premier League, FA Youth Cup, Premier League Two, Premier League International Cup and English Football League Trophy during his time at St Mary's Stadium. This week, he took to Twitter to send a message to the Southampton fans, thanking them for their support.

Olufunwa wrote: "Thank you Southampton FC for the past 11 years. I’ve worked with so many amazing staff members and players who’ve helped me grow as a player and person and given me so many experiences I’ll never forget.  Love to all the fans for giving me so much support on my journey too."

Regarded as a kid with great potential, Olufunwa officially joined the Southampton Academy in 2010 after he was scouted while playing for a local club. He then came through the ranks before making his debut for the U23 squad.
