Adeleke camp calls on Inec to issue their man with certificate of return following his victory

OSUN State's new governor-elect Senator Ademola Adeleke is yet to receive his certificate of return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (Inec) despite being declared the winner of the recent gubernatorial election.

Over the weekend, after a gruelling two-horse race, Senator Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) floored incumbent Governor Gboyega Oyetola of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). On Sunday morning, University of Lagos vice chancellor Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, the returning officer for the election, officially declared Senator Adeleke the winner with 403,371 votes.

According to Inec's official figures, Governor Oyetola got 375,027 votes, while Action Democratic Party (ADP) candidate Kehinde Atanda came in at a distant third with 10,104 votes, followed by Akin Ogunbiyi of the Accord Party with 4,515 votes. Senator Adeleke won 17 local governments while Governor Oyetola won 13 local governments.

However, according to popular singer David Adeleke, the governor-elect's nephew, popularly known as Davido, his uncle is yet to be presented with his certificate of return. Even when election results are disputed, as Governor Oyetola appears to be doing in this instance, Inec still issues certificate of return.

Davido said: “Some 48hrs after our victory in the Osun gubernatorial elections, we are yet to receive our certificate.  Please no one should tamper with the will of the Osun people, please issue the certificate as required by law."

Despite the fact that President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated Senator Adeleke, Governor Oyetola is yet to concede defeat. In a terse statement, the told his supporters to remain calm, saying he has taken cognisance of the results of the governorship election, saying that the party would be responding appropriately after studying the results and consulting with critical stakeholders.
