Calvin Bassey flies into London as Brighton and Ajax begin auction for his services

SUPER Eagles defender Calvin Bassey flew from Scotland to London's Gatwick Airport last night for discussions about a transfer away from Glasgow Rangers amid reports of an auction between Ajax and Brighton for his services.

Bassey, 22, who joined Rangers from Leicester City, was a revelation for the Glasgow side impressing both at left-back and centre-half last season. His good form in both the league and Europe earned him a place in the Nigerian national team and now, several English Premier League clubs are looking to bring Bassey down south.

Rangers are due to play Blackpool later today at Bloomfield Road but it seems certain Bassey will not be featuring in the game. Ajax have reportedly out in an offer just shy of £20m for Bassey, as the Dutch giants are looking to sign him as a replacement for defender Lisandro Martinez who they are about to sell to Manchester United.

However, that evaluation falls short of what Rangers are looking and both sides are set to continue talks over the fee. Ajax have banked more than £40m this summer from the sales of Sebastian Haller and Ryan Gravenberch to Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, while they have spent £26m to sign winger Steven Bergwijn from Tottenham, as well as a further £9m on AZ Alkmaar defender Owen Wijndal.

With Bassey heading out for talks over a move away, Glasgow Rangers look set to pocket a club record fee for the second time this year. Two years after joining the club for around £250,000, Rangers making around £20m back is an incredible bit of business, especially with the prospect of more to come if the clubs can agree add-ons.
