Super Falcons qualify for Women's World Cup after beating Cameroon 1-0 yesterday

NIGERIA'S senior women's football team the Super Falcons have qualified for the Fifa World Cup taking place in Australia and New Zealand in July August 2023 after qualifying for the semi finals of the Women's Africa Cup of Nations yesterday.

In a hard-fought quarter final, the Falcons beat the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon in Casablanca yesterday to become one of the semi finalists. Under Fifa's qualification structure, the four teams that make it to the semi finals of the continental tournament get to represent Africa at the Women's World Cup.

Thanks to a 56th minute header from winger Rasheedat Ajibade, Nigeria now join hosts Morocco, South Africa and Zambia as the four teams that will represent the continent on the world stage next year. However, one of the four beaten quarter-finalists Senegal, Tunisia, Botswana and Cameroon still has an outside chance of qualifying for the World Cup via an inter-confederation play-off.

On July 17, Senegal play Tunisia and Botswana face Cameroon, with the winners advancing to the inter-confederation play-offs. With the four teams that have already qualified, they will now focus on winning the tournament with the semi-finals taking place on July 18 and the final holding on July 23

Zambia go up against South Africa in Casablanca the semi final, while Nigeria will lock horns with hosts Morocco in Rabat. Nigeria is by far the most successful team in this tournament, having won it nine times and qualified for all eight Women's World Cups.
