Ipob wants Nnamdi Kanu moved to a prison in the southeast saying terrorists plan to execute him

SECESSIONIST group the Indigenous People of Biafra (Ipob) has asked that its detained leader Nnamdi Kanu be transferred to a prison facility in the southeast geo-political zone because terrorists plan to eliminate him in the Department of State Services (DSS) custody.

Highly controversial, Mr Kanu has been campaigning for the recreation of the independent republic of Biafra which broke away from Nigeria between July 1967 and January 1970 during the civil war. His campaign, which has led to the phenomenal growth of Ipob, has set him at odds with the Nigerian government who him arrested and put on trial for treason.

While the case was still pending, Mr Kanu was granted bail in April 2017 on health grounds but skipped his bail after flouting the conditions given to him by the court and fled Nigeria. However, in a dramatic development in June last year, Mr Kanu was abducted in Kenya in a commando operation carried out by Nigerian security operatives  and flown to Nigeria where his trial has resumed.

Earlier this month, Justice Binta Nyako dismissed a bail application filed by Mr Kanu, as well as a plea for the revocation of the arrest warrant issued against him when he ceased to attend court. She described the application, filed by Mr Kanu’s lawyers, led by Mike Ozekhome, as an abuse of the court process.

Expressing fears that with the ruling Mr Kanu's life may be in danger, Ipob spokesman Emma Powerful, said their leader should be transferred to a southeast prison for his safety. he added that terrorists recently arranged an attack on President Muhammadu Buhari's convoy to raise money for arms procurement.

Mr Powerful said: “We want everybody to understand that the reality of the Fulani agenda to Fulanise Nigeria is around the corner. All Fulani’s calculated plan to attack our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, in DSS custody is being done with full collaboration with the DSS.

“Our intelligence unit uncovered the Fulani evil plan against our leader. Therefore, we demand that our leader Kanu be immediately transferred to a prison in the Eastern region for his safety because if anything untoward happens to him Nigeria will see and feel total and consuming madness even after the Biafran nation’s freedom is fully achieved, they will never have peace.

“What happened in Katsina with reference to the so-called attack on Buhari is an arranged attack by Buhari and Fulani to raise more money to procure and acquire arms which they will use to prosecute their planned jihad to conquer every part of Nigeria but Biafraland will be their waterloo because we are Umuchineke. A very pertinent question to ask is, how can bandits and terrorists be rampaging the north, even supposedly attacking the president’s convoy and breaking into prison yards to release their colleagues while Buhari and Fulani governments deployed and continue to deploy battalion of soldiers to occupy many peaceful communities in Biafraland?"
