Former Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr shortlisted for Malian Eagles head coach job

NIGERIA'S former head coach Gernot Rohr looks set to take over the job of managing the Malian Eagles following the sacking of Mohamed Magassouba after he failed to qualify the ream for the 2022 World Cup.

Mr Rohr managed Nigeria for five years from 2016 to 2021, leading the Super Eagles to the 2018 World Cup in Russia. However, the former Bayern Munich and Bordeaux defender was sacked late last year after an unsatisfactory World Cup campaign

Currently unoccupied since losing his job in Nigeria, Mr Rohr is vastly experienced in African football and has been rated as a top candidate for the Malian job. Other coaches listed are former Mali international Eric Chelle, Djibril Drame and AS Otoho coach Alou Badra Diallo.

Mali dismissed Mr Magassouba following the Eagles’ failure to qualify for the World Cup despite their strong pool of talent. Femafoot, the Malian football federation, is expected to make a decision over the coming weeks.

A Franco-German, Mr Rohr managed the Nigerian national team longer than any other Super Eagles' coach. A former Bordeaux manager, apparently, he had been linked with the Malian job in the past but said he chose Nigeria at the time.
