Every Nigerian should make a solemn pledge today that by 2030 their nation will become the world’s leading manufacturer of the following products:

Ayo Akinfe

[1] Ceiling fans
[2] Standing fans
[3] Table fans
[4] Ladies handbags
[5] Generator sets
[6] Solar panels
[7] Anti-malaria drugs
[8] Motorcycles
[9] Stockfish
[10] Bibles

For me, if you are the world’s largest consumer of a product, you should also be the world’s largest producer of that product. Our intellectual laziness has gone too far now and it is time to say enough is enough.

How can a nation consume 10m units of a product annually and not produce one of that same product? This is a recipe for perpetual poverty and under-development and it is time to draw a line in the sand and say: “We will not go beyond this point.”

As a people, we are as guilty as hell. It is convenient to blame our clueless, vision-less and corrupt leaders but if you have penchant for importing goods with no plans to manufacture them locally, you are part of the problem too.
