Police release Okorocha's son-in-law Uche Nwosu who was dramatically arrested yesterday

SECURITYMEN in Imo State have released former Governor Rochas Okorocha's son-in-law Uche Nwosu who was dramatically arrested while worshipping at St Peter’s Anglican Church at Eziama Obieri in Nkwerre Local Government Area of the state yesterday.

Mr Nwosu, a former commissioner ion Governor Okorocha's cabinet and the husband of his first daughter Uloma, was a gubernatorial aspirant during the last elections. Since then, he and Governor Hope Uzodinma have been sworn enemies as Mr Nwosu is regarded as the former governor's right hand man.

Yesterday, masked men stormed the church in Eziama Obieri and whisked Mr Nwosu away in what was originally thought to be a kidnapping operation. Former Governor Okorocha, now the senator representing Imo West Senatorial District, has blamed his successor Governor Uzodinma for the arrest, saying the police officers pushed his wife, Nkechi, to the ground and tore the clothes of Uloma during the arrest.

Senator Okorocha said: “Uche Nwosu, my wife and daughter were at the church for an outing service, when a group of men in police uniform started shooting while the sermon was ongoing. In the course of their activities, they pushed down my wife and tore my daughter’s clothes. No warrant of arrest. No invitation.

"We suspected kidnapping at first. Uche Nwosu was dragged into a bus carrying Imo State Government number plate. They were identified as policemen from Imo State Government House by their colleagues attached to Uche for the burial of his mother and I got the police commissioner who said that the inspector-general of police approved his arrest.

“The shock of such an arrest without a warrant and humiliating members of my family is unfortunate. Most security operatives in Imo know nothing about the arrest. I don’t know what they framed up.”

After the drama, Mr Nwosu has been released and did not spend a night in custody, according to  his spokesman Nwadike Chikezie. He added: “While we await police report on why the abduction and arrest, we call on everyone to remain calm and focused because God is in charge of the whole situation.”

“The act of desecrating the House of God as we all know is a direct affront and challenge to God Almighty. We leave God to do his fight because vengeance is of God but to all Christians, does it now mean that the government has no more respect for God and does it now mean that the House of God is no more a place one can take refuge? God prove your answers.”
