European clubs latch on to Omicron strain using it as an excuse to withhold players from Nations Cup

NIGERIA may have problems getting hold of members of the Super Eagles for the forthcoming African Cup of Nations because top European clubs are stepping up their objections to player release for the tournament.

Historically, European clubs have been compelled to release their African players for the Nations Cup as Fifa statutes mandate them too but that could now all change in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. With the Omicron strain originating from South Africa, some clubsides are trying to use it as a loophole to hold on to their players, using health arguments.

Already, the European Clubs Association (ECA) has written to Fifa, saying it is deeply concerned with the well being of players amid the worsening public health situation following the emergence of Omicron strain. ECA has asked Fifa to ensure all necessary precautions are in place to protect players and club interests.

Although the clubs have not specifically asked for a change of Fifa rules and statutes, they have latched on to Covid-19 to ask for action, claiming that the health situation continues to deteriorate in an alarming manner. Western countries have begun to reintroduce travel bans, quarantine requirements and other restrictions because of concerns about the impact of the Omicron variant.

This year, the bulk of the 576 players across 24 teams expected for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations play for European clubs. Due to be played last year, the delayed 2021 African Cup of Nations will be played in Cameroon between January 9 and February 6, 2022.
