FORMER Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor Professor Charles Soludo is on course to become the next Anambra State governor after taking an unassailable lead in yesterday's elections following the official declaration of results in eight local government areas.
Yesterday, Anambrans went to the polls to elect a successor to Governor Willie Obiano, with Professor Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (Apga) the frontrunner. Poling was extended until today in some areas due to some technical hitches but so far the Independent National Electoral Commission (Inec) has declared the results in six of the state's local government areas.
Inec has revealed the results from the highly populous Onitsha South, Awka South, Anaocha, Anambra East, Orumba South, Orumba North, Aguata and Njikoka local government areas, with Professor Soludo firmly in the driving seat. There are 18 candidates contesting in the election but the only two real challengers to Professor Soludo are Andy Uba of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Valentine Ozigbo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Ifeanyi Ubah of the Young Progressives Party (YPP).
