Super Eagles redeem image and revive their World Cup qualification hopes with 2-0 victory

NIGERIA'S Super Eagles have revived their World Cup qualification hopes and ameliorated some of the humiliation they recently suffered in Lagos by beating Central African Republic 2-0 in Douala this afternoon.

On Thursday, the Eagles put their qualification for Qatar 2022 in jeopardy when they suffered a humiliating 0-1 loss to the Central African Republic at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos when they conceded an 89th minute goal. Today, the team, made amends in the return let which took place at Douala in Cameroon, thanks to goals from Leon Balogun and Victor Osimhen, two of the biggest culprits ion Thursday.

Today, the Eagles bounced back, starting the clash on the front foot, dictating the play right from the start and in the 29th minute were rewarded when Balogun, who was responsible for the goal conceded in the first leg, fired home a perfect volley from a Chidozie Awaziem cross. After the curtain raiser, the Eagles continued to dominate possession and it was only a matter of time before they doubled their advantage.

Just before half time, the second goal came as Osimhen tapped home from close range following a brilliant low cross from William Troost-Ekong. In the second half, Central African Republic's Wild Beasts tried to find their way back into the game but it was the Eagles that got close to scoring, with Osimhen guilty of missing a clear chance, while substitute Chidera Ejuke was denied by the goalkeeper.

Ejuke had come on for Ahmed Musa, who finally earned his 100th official international cap, making him the third Nigerian to do so after Joseph Yobo and Vincent Enyeama. With the win, the Super Eagles now have nine points from four games ahead of the final two matches at home to Cape Verde and away to Liberia next month.
