Super Eagles dream for Tammy and Tomori looks set to end after Southgate calls them up

NIGERIAN-born duo Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori may have seen any lingering hopes of them featuring for the Super Eagles evaporate after England manager Gareth Southgate invited them to camp for this month's World Cup qualifiers.

Roma striker Abraham and AC Milan defender Tomori, have both been in fine form this season but have been overlooked by Mr Southgate. Both players are way down the ranking list when it comes to their positions in the England squad that several football commentators have told them they are better off opting for Nigeria if they want to play international football.

Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr had even declared that he would consider picking them if they went through nationality switch with global footballing body Fifa. Having both played for England at youth level, the duo need to formally switch their allegiance to Nigeria to be eligible to play for the Super Eagles.

On October 9 and 12, England face Andorra and Hungary in World Cup 2022 play-offs and Mr Southgate has invited the duo to camp. Abraham, who once said he always regarded his international future as being with England,  has been called up to join the squad for the first time since November 2020.

Abraham, 24, has managed four goals and three assists in 10 appearances for Jose Mourinho’s Roma side this season, winning praise for his all-round game and ability to link up with those around him.  Having made his international debut in 2017, Abraham has racked up six caps for the Three Lions, bagging his only goal in a 7-0 thumping of Montenegro in late 2019.

However, he has not been involved since coming on as a late substitute in a victory over Iceland in November 2020, after which he quickly began to lose his spot in the Chelsea squad. Following Thomas Tuchel’s arrival at Stamford Bridge in January, Abraham saw his minutes at club level plummet and Mr Southgate was unable to offer him a spot in the England squad for the last European Championship.
