Liverpool's 20 year old midfielder Curtis Jones has a Nigerian father so is eligible to play for the Eagles

LIVERPOOL midfielder and England youth international Curtis Jones is eligible to play for the Super Eagles after it emerged that he has a Nigerian father which could spark off a tug of war between the two countries for his services.

Jones, 20, has recently broke into the Liverpool first team, has featured for the England U21 team, receiving his first call-up on 7 October 2020. Over the last two seasons, Jones has gradually emerged as a Liverpool first team player, scoring his first UEFA Champions League goal on December 1 2020  and February 28 2021, he scored his first league goal of the season in a 2–0 away win over Sheffield United.

Yesterday, his girlfriend of Pakistani extraction Saffie, posted pictures of the two of them with British flags next to their images. Saffie posted a Pakistani flag next to her image and a Nigerian flag next to picture of Curtis, highlighting where at least one of their parents came from originally.

Curtis is believed to have been born of a Nigerian father and English mother but took his mother's name. For now, the identity of his father is unknown but his mother bears the name Sandra Jones, meaning he is eligible to play for both England and Nigeria.

For Nigeria to secure the services of the player, however, the Nigerian Football federation will have to apply for a switch for global governing body Fifa. Having already played for the England youth team, securing this Fifa approval is mandatory for Curtis to be eligible to feature for the Super Eagles.
