When President Buhari addresses the United Nations today I expect him to demand the following of the international community

Ayo Akinfe

[1] Every year, Nigeria demands a minimum of $50bn in foreign direct investment. If the rest of the world is not prepared to put its money where its mouth is then they should not complain when Boko Haram do a Taliban on us

[2] Before the end of 2021, at least one pharmaceutical giant must open a factory in Nigeria to produce a Covid-19 vaccine to be distributed across Africa

[3] All this talk about clean energy is hypocritical if Africa remains the dumping ground for petrol and diesel vehicles. The UN Security Council must mandate automobile manufacturers to open electronic car plants across Africa

[4] Multinational energy companies must be compelled to open wind and solar farms across Africa in line with their clean energy commitments

[5] Fortune 500 companies must be mandated by the UN Security Council to invest at least 10% of their profits in Africa

[6] The United Nations should launch the most ambitious skills transfer programme ever seen, compelling the world’s top 10 economies to open facilities in Africa. It should be regarded as important a project as the Marshall Plan was after World War Two

[7] The UN Security Council should pass a resolution which makes buying unprocessed primary goods from Africa a criminal offence on a par with money laundering. Anyone who wants African goods should open a processing plant there

[8] Taking wildlife out of Africa and putting these animals in zoos is nothing but a crime against Mother Nature. The UN should regard the practice as equal to war crimes and genocide. If the rest of the world wants to see African wildlife, they should invest in the continent’s tourism industry

[9] The UN Security Council should pass a resolution compelling any foreign company that gets a major supply contract with any African government in excess of $1m to open a facility in that country to manufacture the goods locally

[10] International airlines fly to Africa every day but the continent has very few maintenance repair and overhaul (MRO) facilities. This is as criminal an offence as slave plantations and Nazi concentration camps. At least 20% of the world’s MRO facilities must be located in Africa. The UN Security Council must pass a resolution to this effect.
