Ondo State Amotekun Corps arrests three herdsmen and confiscates 40 cows as anti-grazing kicks in

THREE Fulani cattle herdsmen have been arrested by the Ondo State Security Network Agency popularly known as the Amotekun Corps with 40 of their cows confiscated after they were found to have breached the recent anti-open grazing law.

Like all the other 16 states that make yup southern Nigeria, Ondo State has banned open grazing in line with a Southern Governors Forum directive. Earlier this week, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu signed the bill recently passed by the Ondo State House of Assembly into law, making it a criminal offence to engage in open grazing.

Following the adopting of the new law, Amotekun immediately swing into action, arresting the herdsmen in the Owode area of Akure South Local Government Area. Chief Adetunji Adeleye, the commander of the Ondo State Amotekun Corps said, the herdsmen were nabbed following distress calls received from farmers and residents of Owode, a community very close to the Akure Airport.

Chief Adeleye said: “The cows have been impounded, while three herders were apprehended and investigation is still ongoing.”  He also disclosed that the corps had kick-started a strategy to checkmate crimes during the ember period.
