APC members in Nasarawa vow to oppose EFCC attempt to arrest former governor Al-Makura

MEMBERS of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nasarawa State have vowed to resist any attempt by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to arrest their former governor Senator Umaru Al-Makura saying the petition against him was baseless.

Last week, Senator Al-Makura, who is now the lawmaker representing Nasarawa South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, was invited for questioning by the EFCC after it received a petition relating to misappropriation while he was governor. Between 2011 and 2019, Senator Al-Makura was the Nasarawa State governor and having being elected to the senate, he now has his eyes on becoming the next APC chairman.

Musa Yayaya Azara, one of the ruling party's chieftains in the state, warned that any attempt to arrest or detain Senator Al-Makura based on a fictitious petition to frustrate his national chairmanship ambition would be strongly resisted by the entire people of the state. He dismissed the invitation of the former governor by the EFCC with a wave of the hand, saying it would not affect his ambition to become the next national chairman of the APC.

Mr Azara maintained that Senator Al-Makura remained the best governor among all the governors that had governed the state so far because he ran the most transparent and accountable administration ever. He noted that those trying to frustrate Senator Al-Makura’s bid to be the next APC national chairman using the EFCC were enemies and did not mean well for the APC and vowed that they would not succeed.

“If you see any good road, street, school, hospital in Nasarawa State today, it was built by Al-Makura. He opened up the state for us and we will continue to be ever grateful to him for the developmental strides he brought to the state.

“If the APC is looking for an accountable and transparent chairman, I think Al-Makura is the person. If the APC is looking for a peace and bridge builder, I think Al-Makura remains the only option to go with,” Mr Azara added.
