Attorney-general Malami technically flouts Twitter ban by logging on to delete his account

NIGERIA'S attorney-general of the federation Abubakar Malami has technically flouted the federal government’s ban on the use of Twitter by logging in to deactivate his personal account yesterday.

Last Friday, the federal government suspended the use of all Twitter accounts in the country indefinitely after the social media site deleted a tweet from President Muhammadu Buhari. Acting on the ban, Mr Malami AGF took to his Facebook page yesterday, posting a photo and a caption which read My Twitter Account Deactivated.

However, the Twitter handle of President Buhari and other key government officials remains active up until now. There is, however, confusion as to how Mr Malami accessed his account, since the Twitter URL has been suspended by all Internet service providers across Nigeria.

Last week, Mr Malami threatened to prosecute Nigerians who were still using virtual private networks to access Twitter. Earlier today, Nigeria's information minister Alhaji Lai Mohammed, noted that Mr Malami will take the decision on whether or not to prosecute the general overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye and the founder of Deeper Christian Life Ministry Worldwide, Pastor William Kumuyi, for using Twitter.
