As part of the ongoing constitutional review we should have green obligations too

Ayo Akinfe

[1] Gas flaring will end immediately. A gas network will be constructed to pipe it to every home in the country

[2] Farmers will be discouraged  from using chemicals, pesticides and other additives. They will also be encouraged to dedicate part of their farms to organic agriculture

[3] Companies and individuals who install solar panels on their premises will be given tax breaks equivalent to the value of the energy they produce

[4] Indiscriminate tree felling will be a criminal offence and the use of firewood will be discouraged through the provision of other forms of energy like kerosene, gas and electricity

[5] Moves will be made to expand Nigeria's tropical rain forest by planting trees in the affected states. We will aim to increase the size of our tropical rain forest area by about one third

[6] In the far north of the countries, guar gum, neem, cactus, baobab and gum arabic trees will be planted to combat increasing desertification

[7] Erosion will be addressed by making it compulsory for every local government to build gutters in municipal areas

[8] At the moment, around 90% of Nigerian journeys are conducted by road. We will aim to reduce this to no more than 50% over the next 10 years by the expansion of rail, maritime and air transport

[9] Face-to-face housing will be phased out over the next 10 years as getting large numbers of people to live in such close proximity breeds disease, pollution and environmental degradation

[10] It will be made illegal to build a house without constructing guttering around the roof
