Governor Babajide Sanwoolu unveils the first-ever electric car assembled in Nigeria

GOVERNOR Babajide Sanwoolu has unveiled the first-ever electric car to be assembled in Nigeria at a special ceremony in Lagos State pointing that the country will join the gradual migration away from petrol automobiles.

Worldwide, every country is moving away from petrol-powered cars as they are more environmentally friendly and have a far less carbon footprint. However, Nigeria has lagged way behind this switch, with lawmakers even rejecting a bill to encourage the use of electric cars last year.

In what appears to be a sea change now, Governor Sanwoolu unveiled the first electric car to be assembled in Nigeria today. It was assembled by the Stallion Group Automobile Factory in the Ojo area of Lagos State.

Gbenga Akosile, the governor's spokesman, said with the unveiling, Nigerians could now drive electric cars, as Lagos remains the hub for the nation’s economy and a pacesetter in industrialisation. He pointed out that Lagos State remains a home for meaningful development.

Mr Akosile added: “This is a confirmation that Lagos is a destination of choice and will continue to attract more global brands. Lagos State's Governor, Babajide Sanwoolu unveiled the first electric car to be assembled in Nigeria, so Lagosians and indeed Nigerians can now drive electric cars."
