Events of the last 48 hours have convinced me that the Nigerian revolution will take place in our lifetime

Ayo Akinfe

(1) It is crystal clear to the whole world now that the gulf between the haves and the have-nots in Nigeria is now totally unsustainable. No matter what anyone says, social convulsions are inevitable

(2) We are the poverty capital of the world with about 87m people living in extreme poverty. When nearly 90m of your citizens live on less than $2 a day, you are going to have a revolution whether you like it or not

(3) To make matters easy, Nigeria has a very heartless ruling class. Just looking at the way they have hoarded Covid-19 palliatives alone tells you that they are not interested in offering the masses any kind of reform

(4) One thing I just love about the last week is that the Nigerian masses have eschewed all attempts to divide them along ethnic lines. The ethnic bigots and jingoists have been working overtime but I did not see anyone fighting over ethnicity or religion at those warehouses when the bony hand of hunger forced them to scavenge

(5) This last week has also shown the masses, that their enemies are within their own communities. There is no state in the country where “outsiders” hoarded palliatives meant for the masses. All this talk about secession and division has been proven to be hot air

(6) One other thing we have learnt over the last week is that our bourgeoisie are cowards. A man calls himself the Jagaban of Lagos but did not have the guts to stand up to the masses when they came visiting. Likewise, the Oba of Lagos was in such a hurry to flee his palace that he did not even wait to take his staff of office with him. Contrast that with the way the masses stand up to the security forces and get shot

(7) When I saw the size of the warehouse in Jos and the amount of food stored in it, I asked myself why this food was not distributed across the local government areas of Plateau State ages ago. Our elite want to rebag the food and sell it on the open market for huge profits. Some of the images we have seen over the last week will live in our memories forever

(8) Some members of the middle class have been victims of these raids. Consider it a sacrifice you have to make for our beloved nation. Those loses you incurred are your contribution towards the Nigerian revolution

(9) We are lucky in that President Buhari has no idea of how to address the issues, so we have a 100% guarantee that next year’s uprising will be bigger and angrier. With low oil prices, reduced productivity, a global economic slowdown, no diversification, insecurity, etc, it is inevitable that by this time next year, Nigeria’s masses will be poorer, hungrier and angrier

(10) #EndSARS has been a good dress rehearsal for the ultimate people’s revolt that will give birth to a new Nigeria. Coronavirus has helped immensely too as it has exposed our ruling elite for the ruthless and selfish lot they are. Now is the time to start building the revolutionary party that will take over the running of the nation when the masses succeed in overthrowing the existing order
