We had our Sharpeville in Lekki
Ayo Akinfe
We had our Sharpeville in Lekki
A Tiananmen Square melee
Young people gunned down in their prime
Wanting good government was their crime
They seek to change society
Pressing leaders for probity
Asking that bad governance ends
And for past crimes they make amends
Youths want accountability
That welfare's a priority
They want the police force reformed
And brutality be deformed
Nigerians no longer wants Sars
Uniformed crooks with stars and bars
Marching people to cash machines
To withdraw cash to back their needs
Rather than address these matters
Government replied with blood splatters
They sent out troops to kill our youth
Hired thugs to bury the truth
Shooting young people as they please
Killing like criminals with ease
Their crimes are part of other woes
Poor living standards for us goes
When our youth said we'll take no more
They were gunned down in a galore
Murdering them as in Sharpeville
A Tiananmen Square turkey kill
That day will live in ignominy
Nigeria's date of infamy
When troops were used to kill the youth
Who did nothing but tell the truth
