#EndSARS protesters raise nearly $10,000 to buy prosthetic limb for disabled demonstrator

DEMONSTRATORS protesting against police brutality in Nigeria have successfully raised N3.7m ($9,650) within four hours to purchase a prosthetic limb for a disabled simply known as Jane who has been participating in the protests on crutches.

Over the last fortnight, Nigerian youths has been on the streets demanding the scrapping of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (Sars) police unit, responsible for extra-judicial killings. Their #EndSARS movement has been highly successful attracting widespread support both locally and internationally.

Nonso Egemba, a Nigerian medical expert better known as Aproko Doctor, launched the fundraiser for Jane in the early hours of Sunday after spotting her on the demonstrations. He added that the lady graduated in 2013 but she has been unable to get a job due to her disability.

Dr Egemba, enjoined Nigerians to donate N500,000 within a month to help support the cause but within minutes after the launch, the target was achieved. As of this morning, 619 people had donated ₦ 3,708,500 to support the purchase of the prosthetic limb and Dr Egemba said the development signals a new dawn in Nigeria.

He added: “They’ll make you think this country won’t work because of tribe and religion, gender etc. We’ve shown them that they want it that way because of their selfish interests but a new Nigeria is emerging and we’ll be here for it.
