Inec declares incumbent Governor Willie Obiano the victor in Anambra gubernatorial elections

NIGERIA'S Independent National Electoral Commission (Inec) has declared incumbent Anambra State governor Willie Obiano the winner of Saturday's gubernatorial elections and the candidate duly elected to serve in office for the next four years.

 

Governor Obiano, who was first elected in 2013, stood on the platform of his party the All Progressives Grand Alliance (Apga). He faced still challenges from several opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and President Muhammadu Buhari's All progressives Alliance (APC).

 

According to Inec, at the end of the collation of results from the 21 local government areas, Governor Obiano polled 234,071 votes to beat Tony Nwoye of the APC,  who came second with 98,752 votes. Professor Zana Akpagu, the returning officer and the vice chancellor of the University of Calabar, released the official figures at Inec's offices in the state capital  Awka.

 

Oseloka Obaze, the PDP candidate, came third in the contest with 70,293 votes according to Inec. Already, Mr Nwoye has congratulated Governor Obiano and has agreed to accept the results of the elections, pointing out that he will not be challenging them in court.
