Onyekuru eyes a return to the English Premier league as he resumes training with Monaco

SUPER Eagles winger Henry Onyekuru has resumed training with his French clubside Monaco full of confidence that a good season will result in him moving to the English Premier League either with Everton who once signed him or another club.

Onyekuru, 22, was signed by Everton from Belgian side Eupen on June 30 2017 in a £7m deal and then sent out on loan to several clubs including Anderlecht and Galatasaray. Everton had hoped that he would break into the Super Eagles team and gain enough caps to enable him play in the English Premier League but injury put paid to this.

A nasty knee injury ruled Onyekuru out of Nigeria's 2018 World Cup squad and since coming back, he has failed to hit the heights that made Everton sign him originally. Onyekuru joined Monaco on a five-year deal in August 2019 but his debut campaign in the French top-flight did not go as planned, with him only making four appearances and he was subsequently loaned out to Galatasaray again.

Last season, Onyekuru scored once in 10 league appearances for Galatasaray and is now back with Monaco preparing for the start of the 2020/21 campaign. He will be aiming to fight his way to into coach Niko Kovac's team after he struggled to establish himself in Robert Moreno's line-up before the Spanish manager was fired this month.

This week, Onyekuru joined up with the Monaco squad as the team began its pre-season training and is looking fit again. He will be slugging it out with fellow Super Eagles Samuel Kalu who plays for Bordeaux in the French league this season.

According to Onyekuru, his ultimate ambition is to feature in the English Premier League. He is hoping that a successful season with Monaco will boost his stock and put him on the transfer radar once again.

Onyekuru said: "We have our plans but then life brings its own plans. However, I am still working on it and hopefully I will be back soon, maybe not with Everton but surely in the Premier League.

"I have been with players like Keita Balde from my days at the Aspire Academy and Cesc Fabregas is a top guy, who welcomed me when I arrived at the club, so it's like going back home. Monaco are a big club and they know how to work with their players when it comes to transfers, just look at Anthony Martial.

"I hope to have a good season or two and hopefully the future will be bright." Onyekuru has been a regular fixture in Gernot Rohr's Super Eagles squad since making his debut against Togo in an international friendly in June 2017.
