Glasgow Rangers leftback Calvin Bassey declares for Nigeria as Sanusi signs five year Porto deal

NEW Glasgow Rangers leftback Calvin Bassey has declared himself available for the Super Eagles whenever Nigeria wants him  pointing out that his heart has always been set in representing the country despite being born in England.

Bassey, 20, joined Rangers in a four year deal from English Premier League side Leicester City and has comfortably slotted into the leftback position, playing in all the club's pre-season friendlies. Surrounded by compatriots, Bassey has for company midfielder Joe Aribo, a fans favourite and centreback Leon Balogun, who recently joined Rangers on a free transfer.

Born in England, Bassey is eligible to play for the Three Lions but is only interested in featuring for Nigeria. Bassey accepted an invitation to the Flying Eagles camp in 2019 but was dropped at the last hurdle just before the team went to the U20 World Cup in Poland but this has not dampened his enthusiasm for Nigeria.

He is still very much in touch with the Flying Eagles coach Paul Aigbogun who invited him to camp and Bassey hopes that with his latest move he will develop into a fully-fledged international. Apparently, Super eagles head coach Gernot Rohr has watched one of the recent Glasgow Rangers in which Bassey has featured.

Bassey said: “I feel Rangers is the best place for me because I have seen players like Joe Aribo come from south of the border and do so well. Obviously, I appreciate everything Leicester have done for me but I just feel Rangers are offering me a massive platform to take my career to the next level and showcase my ability to the world."

Over the last year, Nigeria has uncovered a lot of talent in the left back position with the likes of Zaidu Sanusi of Portuguese side and Jamillu Collins of German side Paderborn 07 all emerging strong. Over the last week Sanusi signed a five year deal with Portuguese champions Porto ahead of the 2020/21 season.

With such talent at his disposal, Mr Rohr will have a selection headache when next the Super Eagles gets together, as he is spoilt for choice. In September, the Eagles are expected to play two friendly matches, which will give the likes of Sanusi and Bassey the opportunity to showcase themselves.
