Super Eagles centreback Semi Ajayi nominated for West Brom player of the year award

FANS of newly-promoted English clubside West Bromwich Albion (WBA) have nominated Super Eagles centreback Semi Ajayi as a candidate for the club's player of the year in recognition of the remarkable season he has just had.

WBA have clinched automatic promotion to the English Premier League after coming second in the English Championship behind Leeds United. Ajayi, 26, was the backbone of the WBA defence during the season, playing in 43 of the club's 46 league games, scoring five goals in the process and is now a big fans' favourite.

His rising fortunes at club level have also coincided with Ajayi's rising international profile that have resulted in him now becoming a Super Eagles regular at the heart of the defence alongside skipper William Ekong of Udinese. In what is another huge cap to his feather, the WBA fans have just nominated Ajayi as the Ideal Boilers Supporters’ Player of the Season  for the 2019/20 campaign.

According to the club's website, Ajayi and 13 other players are in the running for the yearly accolade. To be eligible to be nominated, for the award a player must have made at least 23 appearances in the Sky Bet Championship over the course of the 2019/20 season.

Only four WBA players in Matt Phillips (7), Matheus Pereira (8), Hal Robson-Kanu (10) and Charlie Austin (10), scored more than Ajayi during the season.  Ajayi joined West Brom from demoted Rotherham United in July 2019, signing a four year contract with the Baggies.
