Senators ask Buhari to name Ibadan airport after late Oyo State governor Abiola Ajimobi

NIGERIAN senators have asked the federal government to name the Ibadan airport after the former Oyo State governor Senator Abiola Ajimobi as a mark of respect and in recognition of his services to the city.

Last month, Senator Ajimobi passed away at the age of 70 after succumbing to a Covid-19-related illness and has since been buried in Ibadan. A flambouyant character, Senator Ajimobi served in the fifth senate between 2003 and 2007 and after that went on to get elected as Oyo State governor.

Fort eight years, Senator Ajimobi served as Oyo State governor between 2011 and 2019 after which he sought to return to the senate but was defeated in the elections. Earlier today, the senate observed a minute of silence in his memory and in the ensuing debate, several senators asked that the airport be named after him.

Senator Abdulfatai Buhari, the lawmaker representing Oyo North Senatorial District, moved a motion for the name change and it was seconded by Senator Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun Central Senatorial District. Senator Amosun was the Ogun State governor when Senator Ajimobi served in the same capacity in Oyo State.
