Trump suspends all immigration into the US saying it is needed to protect jobs during the post-Covid-19 recovery

PRESIDENT Donald Trump has announced controversial plans to suspend all immigration into the US as part of his post-coronavirus economic recovery plan saying that the measure was necessary to protect American jobs.

Currently the country most affected in the world, the US has 792,938 of the pandemic, of which 42,518 have unfortunately died. As a result, there has been a shutdown across the country, which experts have estimated will cost the economy $11bn and cut economic growth to 2.3% from 3% last year.

Across the US, several right wing groups have already begun organising protests saying they want all the suspensions lifted and President Trump has supported this campaign, saying the country needs to get back to work. In a move certain to make him popular with his hardline rightwing base, President Trump published a tweet saying that all immigration to the US will be temporarily suspended to protect the jobs of Americans.

President Trump said: ”In light of the attack from the invisible enemy, as well as the need to protect the jobs of our great American citizens, I will be signing an executive order to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States.”

For now, President Trump has not stated how long such a suspension could last or what effect it will have on the operation of US border crossings and on those immigrants who already hold green cards. A firm opponents of international action in addressing the pandemic, President Trump has already instructed his administration to halt funding to the World Health Organisation, claiming it failed in its basic duty in its response to the coronavirus outbreak.
