Kwara fashion designer Dauda Azeez sentenced to 12 strokes of the cane for stealing female underwear

FASHION designer Dauda Azeez has been sentenced to receive 12 strokes of the cane for stealing 16 pairs of used female underwear after pleading guilty to the offence at the Ilorin Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Of late, the crazy habit of stealing female underwear and using it for money-making rituals has become the new fad across Nigeria. Desperate Nigerians eager to make quick money have resorted to the practice, believing that somehow, female underwear is capable of printing money if used in an occult ceremony.

Although so far no one has ever made a dime from the practice, it has become the subject of a heated national debate, forcing the police to take action to combat the menace. Mr Azeez was subsequently arrested and charged to court where he pleaded guilty before Magistrate Afusat Alege.

Prosecution Counsel Corporal Abubakar Isa told the court that the defendant committed the offence on July 2 in the Oke-Kobi area of Chikanda in Kwara State. He added that some residents of Oke-Kobi reported the case to the police and when Azeez’s room was searched, 16 used female underwear were recovered.

According to the police, investigations revealed that the defendant was in the habit of stealing used pants with the motive of sniffing them. Corporal Isa said that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 287 of Penal Code Law.
