Fulani herdsmen strike in Imo State destroying over 200 farms in Owerri West Local Government Area

FULANI cattle herdsmen have carried out another brutal attack in Imo State unleashing

mayhem in the Amakohia-Ubi autonomous community in Owerri West Local Government Area in a vicious assault that destroyed 200 farms.

Over recent years, Fulani herdsmen have been a huge menace across Nigeria, brutalising local farming communities, as their livestock destroy crops and when farmers complain the heavily armed attack pastoralists attack with AK47s. Thousands of people have died in the hands of these herdsmen and earlier this week, Imo State became their latest target.

There is no evidence showing that there was any loss of life this time around as it is believed that the herdsmen only destroyed farms and did not attack any humans. Cyril Ndumanya, the president of the Amakohia-Ubi community, said that millions of naira worth of crops have been lost and hunger could ravage the community.

Mr Ndumanya said: “Last month, we reached an agreement to stop this ugly trend but you can see that they have started again and this time around, what they have destroyed are worth millions of naira. Our cassava, vegetables, maize have been completely destroyed and used by herdsmen to feed their cattle.”

One farmer, who introduced herself as Benedict, added: “I came to my farm to harvest my cassava only to see that cattle have destroyed them. I am shedding tears, I don’t know what to do now.”

Local Chief Nze, said: “We have more than 200 people farming in the area and some of them went to the farm to harvest what they will eat. You can see that the  people are suffering, so I want to ask what will these people affected do ?

“The problem is not that they destroyed our crops but when will this type of thing stop? Whenever the herdsmen destroy  our  farmlands, there is always so much hunger in the land.”
