Promoter Eddie Hearn says unification bout between Joshua and Wilder is now on the cards

NIGERIAN-born world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has moved a step closer to a unification bout with World Boxing Council (WBC) champion Deontay Wilder after his promoter Eddie Hearn indicated the fight could take place soon.

Joshua is the holder of the World Boxing Organisation (WBO), World Boxing Association (WBA), International Boxing Federation (IBF) and International Boxing Organisation (IBO) belts and there have been calls for a unification fight with Wilder. However, contractual wrangling between both camps have prevented the fight from happening, leading to both boxers arranging alternative fights.

Over the weekend, however, Wilder knocked out Dominic Breazeale in the first round of their tie, prompting Mr Hearn to say that this had moved the prospect of a unification fight with Joshua closer. On June 1, Joshua will face challenger Andy Ruiz and if he wins, then a grand rematch with Wilder could be on the cards.

Mr Hearn said a heavyweight unification fight between Joshua and Wilder must happen next, adding that there will be no excuses not to make the fight. Wilder is also under pressure to give the fans what they want and all roads appear to lead to a massive Anglo-American showdown.

"He has taken care of business, now Anthony Joshua needs to do the same against Ruiz Jr at Madison Square Garden on June 1. The fight with AJ and Wilder is the biggest fight in the sport and all being well in two weeks’ time, it must happen next – no excuses, this is the fight that will change the sport globally.

"It’s a legacy fight and AJ wants it so bad. Two big, fast, dangerous and fearless world heavyweight world champions that can turn the lights out with a blink of the eye – it’s a must. First things first, taking care of business on his American debut on June 1 and send a message straight back,” Mr Hearn added.
