Ogun State APC chapter warns Amosun that he may be probed for reckless last minute spending

GOVERNOR Ibikunle Amosun has been warned by the Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) that it will probe all the last minute transactions he is entering into after May 29 when Dapo Abiodun takes over from him.

After the recent general elections, Governor Amosun was suspended from the APC after its National Working Committee (NWC) found him guilty of engaging in anti-party activities. During the elections he had backed his protégé Adekunle Akinlade of the Allied Peoples' Movement (APM) as a governorship candidate against Mr Abiodun, the official APC aspirant.

As it happened, Mr Abiodun defeated Mr Akinlade and is due to be sworn-in as governor on May 29. However, political opponents have accused Governor Amosun of reckless spending ahead of the handover, saying that he may end up emptying the treasury before leaving office on May 29.

Tunde Oladunjoye, the publicity secretary of the caretaker committee of the Ogun State chapter of the APC, alleged that the administration has engaged in the late award of contracts. Other allegations made against him include withdrawals from the treasury, the sale of land and the illegal recruitment of cronies into senior positions of the Ogun State Civil Service, ostensibly to tie the hands of its successor.

Mr Oladunjoye said: “It has come to our notice that the outgoing administration of His Excellency Senator Ibikunle Amosun is busy with last minute awards of contracts, selling and auctioning of government properties and secret recruitments into the civil service in a way to tie the hands of the incoming governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun. Very shockingly, our party wishes to warn the members of the general public that such hurried transactions would not necessarily be binding on the incoming administration.

“We urge Ogun State’s top senior civil servants not to be part of the desperate moves of the departing governor to undermine the socio-economic stability of our state by engaging in, condoning or being part of any act that breaches or constitute a flagrant abuse of laid-down rules, regulations and due process. It is our belief that an administration with less than two months to handover, should by now, be preparing its handover notes for a smooth transition instead of digging pits for the incoming government.

“May we also reiterate here that all loans, overdraft and financial obligations that do not follow due process, including the approval of the Ogun State House of Assembly, would not be honoured. To be forewarned is to be forearmed.”
