Inec declares Umaru Fintiri of the PDP Adamawa State's governor-elect after supplementary poll

NIGERIA's Independent national Electoral Commission (Inec) has declared Alhaji Umaru Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the Adamawa State governor-elect following the collation of the results yesterday after Thursday's supplementary election.

 

Yesterday, on Thursday March 28, Inec conducted supplementary elections in Adamawa State after it had declared the original polls with took place on March 9 as inconclusive. Following the original elections, Inec collated results from 21 local government areas of the state and found that the margin of lead between the two leading parties, was lower than the number of registered voters in polling units where voting was cancelled.

 

At the time, the Alhaji Fintiri of the PDP was leading with 367,471 votes, trailed by incumbent Governor Mohammed Jibrilla Bindow of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who had 334,995 votes. This gave a difference of 32,467, which is less than the 40,948 registered voters in the 44 polling units in 14 local government areas where voting was cancelled.

 

After yesterday's supplementary election and all the votes were tallied, Alhaji Fintiri polled a total of 376,552 votes to beat Governor Bindow who got a total of 336,386 votes. Senator Abdulaziz Nyako of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) came third with 113,237 votes, followed by Chief Emmanuel Bello of to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), who polled 29,792 votes.

 

Returning officer Professor Andrew Haruna, subsequently declared Alhaji Fintiri as duly elected, having scored the highest number of votes in the election. With the Adamawa result now in, Inec just has to resolved the election in Rivers State and it would have concluded the process, although certain results are still subject to appeals.
