Lagos landlord Bassey Wilson charged with assault after he uses belt to flog his tenant's wife

LAGOS landlord Bassey Wilson has been charged with assault and arraigned before the Ikeja Magistrates Court after he used a belt to flog the wife of his tenant for spreading clothes in a part of his compound against his wishes.

Mr Wilson, 51, a businessman, who resides at Ahmadiyya, Meiran, a suburb of Lagos, is

alleged to have committed the offence on July 7 at his residence, according to prosecutor Sergeant Godwin Awase. He said that the accused assaulted Mrs Victoria Obioha, his tenant, by flogging her with the belt which resulted in her receiving some bruises on her body.

Sergeant Awase said:  “The complainant washed and spread her husband’s police uniform and belt on a clothesline but the accused removed the clothes and seized them because there was an argument over where the clothes were spread. The complainant then ran after him in order to retrieve the uniform and belt before  entering his  apartment.

"However, the accused turned on her and used her husband ’s belt to flog her several times all over her body, resulting in injuries. The uniform and belt are still with the accused but the case was reported and the accused was arrested.”

He added that the offence contravened Section 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, which prescribes a three year jail term for assault. Mr Wilson pleaded not guilty and the magistrate, Mrs F.F George,  granted him bail on self-recognition.
