Joel Obi looks set to join Spanish La Liga side Celta Vigo from Serie A's Torino for €5m fee

SUPER Eagles midfielder Joel Obi looks set to join La Liga outfit Celta Vigo after the Spanish side and his Italian club Torino appear to have agreed on a €5m transfer fee that could see him move over the next couple of weeks.

Obi, 27, joined Torino from Inter Milan on July 2 2015, for a €2.2m fee and signed a four year contract but his time in Turin has been plagued with injuries. Highly technical and possessing a sweet left foot Obi made Nigeria's 23-man squad for the World Cup but did not see any action in Russia.

With Torino keen to sell him before the new season starts, obi has attracted interest from numerous teams around Europe notably Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon. He has been told he can leave Torino this summer as he is not in the first team plans of coach Walter Mazzari, who is keen on using proceeds from his sale to strengthen other areas of the team.

Sporting Lisbon were the initial favourite to land Obi but the current crisis rocking the team has worked in favour of Celta who are now ahead of the likes of Espanyol, Benfica and Crystal Palace in the race to sign the midfielder. A fee in the region of €5m should be enough to sign him but ‎with one year left to run on his deal, Celta Vigo will be looking for a fee less than Torino’s valuation of the player who has been with them for three seasons.

Since joining Torino on a permanent transfer he has scored seven goals from 62 games with last season as his most productive in terms of goals and games played. Obi made his Serie A debut for Inter Milan on October 17 2010 against Cagliari when he replaced Philippe Coutinho in the 66th minute.
