Abuja wife files for divorce because he husband refuses to pray with her and did not observe Ramadan

ABUJA housewife Hassana Angyan has asked a Abuja customary court to dissolve her 30-year old marriage to her husband Shuaibu Abdullahi because among other things he refused to join her in prayers and did not observe Ramadan.

In the first such case of its kind, Hassana begged a Kubwa Grade One Area Court to dissolve her marriage over a series of issues with Abdullahi, which included his drunkenness, refusal to pray and battery. She told the court that she got married to Abdullahi 30 years ago, under the Islamic law and the marriage had produced six children.

However, Hassana added that Abdullahi had formed the habit of drinking beer and had refused to perform the five times obligatory Islamic prayers. She pointed out that her husband also refused to observe the Muslim Ramadan fast that was just concluded over the last month.

‎Hassana said: “Whenever he is drunk, he engages me in physical fight and beats me up mercilessly."

Abdullahi, who is a cleaner at Efab Metropolis Estate, Dutse Express, Abuja, pleaded guilty saying that he would write an undertaking to stop drinking.‎ He also said he would share his salary into two, keep half of it to himself and give the other half to his wife for her upkeep.

After hearing the submission from both parties, Judge Abdulwahab Mohammed asked Hassana to observe her husband’s attitude and report to court on June 28. A final decision on the matter is expected when the case is brought back.
