Governor Obaseki appoints young engineer Omobayo Godwins as his new deputy as Shaibu is impeached

GOVERNOR Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has appointed 38 year old engineer Omobayo Marvellous Godwins as his new deputy following the impeachment of Philip Shaibu earlier on today by the state house of assembly.

This morning, in what was the culmination of a high stakes drama played out between the governor and his deputy, the Edo State House of Assembly voted to impeach Shaibu after considering a report on his conduct. His impeachment was sequel to the report submitted by a seven-man panel headed by Justice S A Omonua, which investigated the petition against the deputy governor.

In its report, the panel said the allegation of perjury filed against Mr Shaibu was not proven beyond reasonable doubt but other complaints against the deputy governor were. Among them was the case of disclosure of government official documents, which the4 house said was proven beyond reasonable doubt.

At the plenary session today, 20 members attended,18 members voted in favour of the panel’s reports, while one voted against it. Hon Blessing Agbrbaku, the speaker of the Edo State House if Assembly, thus directed that a clean copy of the impeachment decision be sent to Governor Godwin Obaseki for his assent.
