Luton Town's Gabriel Osho doubtful for Ghana and Mali friendlies after picking up injury

LUTON Town centreback Gabriel Osho may miss out on what should be his international debut later this month after he picked up an injury in a league match on Saturday and had to be substituted in the 81st minute.

Osho, 25, was one of the surprise call-ups for the two friendlies the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) have planned against Ghana and Mali during the forthcoming international Fifa window. Over the weekend, the NFF announced that the Super Eagles will face Ghana on March 22 and them lock horns with Mali four days later in Marrakech, Morocco.

So far this season, Osho has been superb for Luton Town in the English Premier League, so it is no surprise he got an international call-up, especially as skipper William Ekong is out with an injury. However, Osho's dream of making his international debut is now in doubt  as he limped off injured with seven minutes to go on Saturday in Luton Town’s 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace.

Osho, who has scored twice in 16 league appearances for Luton Town this season.

was replaced by Cauley Woodrow. Luton Town manager Rob Edwards said that the versatile centreback remains doubtful for the club’s next league match against Bournemouth taking place over the weekend.

Mr Edwards said: “Gabe has a nasty knock on his knee, one that had been sore in the past, so we’ll have to see how he is."

Meanwhile, another defender, who also got called-up for the first time, Ihefu FC's Benjamin Tanimu, 21, has expressed his delight at being considered. Although Nigeria does not yet have a coach, the NFF has invited 27 players for the two games.

Tanimu impressed with Bendel Insurance last year and as a result, Tanzania’s Ihefu FC secured his signature last month. Tanimu attributes his progress to God and he has vowed to give his very best should the coaches ask him to play against Ghana or Mali.

He added: “This time last year, I was also invited to the U-23 team. I’m glad to have been invited to the Super Eagles of Nigeria for the upcoming international friendlies against Mali and Ghana. It’s huge progress for my career. Clarion call heard and I’m ready to serve Nigeria with all strength.”
