Atiku's son says his father will be running for president again come 2023 while he is eyeing a senate seat

FORMER vice president Alhaji Atiku Abubakar may run for president again come 2023 after his son Adamu revealed that his father may decide to throw his hart into the ring again in three years time.

In office between 1999 and 2007, Alhaji Abubakar has run for president four times in 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2019. Nigeria's presidency traditionally rotates between the north and south of the country and with both President Muhammadu Buhari and Alhaji Abubakar coming from the north of the country, it had been expected that the former vice president would sit out the 2023 contest.

His Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had been expected to nominate a candidate from the south of the country, with Alhaji Abubakar's former running mate ex-Anambra State governor Peter Obi, expected to be the front runner. In a shock revelation, however, Adamu Atiku-Abubakar, said his father will contest for the presidency again in 2023.

Speaking while presenting the scorecard of his ministry as the commissioner for works and energy in Adamawa State, Adamu Abubakar said the current Fintiri administration  had surpassed the expectations of many in the state. He added that he came late into politics was as a result of the advice from his father urging him to spend more time in the private sector to gain enough experience, which would be crucial for him in public life.

Adamu said:  “Personally, I don’t see anything wrong with my father contesting for the presidency. In 2023, my father will be aspiring to the number one office in the land because he has been an astute, strategic,  master politician for almost four decades.”

He added that he himself might run for senate come 2023. "I am basically here to serve my people, so if I am called by the people back home to run for the Senate,  I don’t see anything wrong with that,” Adamu said.
