Huddersfield Town offer Nigeria-eligible teenage winger Onyeka his first professional contract

ENGLISH League One side Huddersfield Town have offered Nigeria-eligible teenage winger Michael Onyeka his first professional contract leading to the player signing a three year deal with the club that will keep him in West Yorkshire until 2029.

Onyeka, 17, is English born to Nigerian parents, making him eligible to represent both countries internationally. After a brief spell in Everton's academy, Onyeka returned to grassroots football before securing a scholarship with Huddersfield Town in December 2024, which came into effect last summer.

He represented the Young Terriers in their FA Youth Cup tie away to Rotherham United earlier in the 2025/26 season before earning a promotion to the U21s as the campaign progressed. Fresh terms were offered to the promising attacker following his impressive performances for the U21s during their successful Professional Development League playoff campaign.

In May, he played 81 minutes as Huddersfield Town defeated Norwich City at Carrow Road to win the Professional Development League playoff final. So far, Michael is yet to 5represent any nation at youth level, so no doubt the Super eagles head coach Eric Chelle will be monitoring his progress.

Jon Worthington, the director of player development at Huddersfield Town said: “Since Michael joined our Under 9-16s programme as an Under 16 last year, he has come on leaps and bounds in terms of his efficiency at the top end of the pitch. His ability matched with his confidence makes him a real threat in the final third, which makes him a valuable member of the of our Academy moving forward.

“To make the steps from Under 16s, to 18s, to then playing a role in our Under 21s successful post-season campaign is a real credit to the work that Michael has done in training, away from the field, and when playing on the pitch. With what we are looking for in our academy, Michael’s drive and aspirations balance well with the culture that we continue to install, which is why he has been rewarded with the early offer of a professional contract.”
