Caf gives Super Falcons bye into second round of Los Angeles 2028 qualification tournament

NIGERIA'S Super Falcons are to face either Sudan or Comoros in the second round of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games qualifiers in October after being given a bye in the first round games scheduled to take place in June.

By far Africa's most successful team, the Super Falcons gave won 10 of the 13 Women's African Cup of Nations tournaments and are the only of the continent's teams to reach the quarterfinals at both the Women’s World Cup and the Olympics. They last featured in the Paris 2024 Olympics and are now gunning for Los Angeles 2028.

Yesterday, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) held the draw for the qualifying series in Cairo, Egypt, with Nigeria drawn by to enter the second round. Nigeria's Super Falcons are among the seeded teams given a bye into the second round, meaning that they will not play until October 2026, when they meet the winner of the Sudan/Comoros clash taking place between June 1 and 9.

Nigeria will then face the winner of that tie between October 5 and 13, with matches played over two legs, home and away. At stake is a place in the later rounds of a demanding qualification series that will eventually produce only two African representatives for the women’s football event in Los Angeles, scheduled to be held from July 29 to 11, 2028.
