SUPER Eagles head coach Eric Chelle is considering inviting Millwall striker Femi Azeez to camp for the forthcoming Unity Cup taking place in London next month as part of his plan to widen the pool of players in the national team.
Between May 26 and 30, the Unity Cup will take place in London with Nigeria participating alongside Jamaica, Zimbabwe and India. Taking place at The Valley, the home ground of English Championship side Charlton Athletic, the tournament will see Nigeria trying to defend the trophy she won last year after defeating Jamaica on penalties following a 2-2 draw in regulation time.
Mr Chelle has said that he will be using the tournament to try out several new players who can be added to the current Super Eagles pool. According to sources close to the team, Mr Chelle is considering extending an invitation to Azeez, a 24 year old striker born to a Nigerian father and a Spanish mother.
Playing in the Championship, the second tier of English football, Azeez has enjoyed a breakout campaign for promotion-chasing Millwall, scoring 17 goal involvements in 33 league appearances. He is represented by London agency Arete, which also manages Wrexham goalkeeper Okonkwo, another player on Mr Chelle's radar.
Although it has been suggested that Everton midfielder Tim Iroegbunam is also of interest to Mr Chelle, he is unlikely to feature in the Unity Cup, considering the fact that he is cap-tied to England, having featured for their youth teams. This means that Iroegbunam will have to undergo a switch through Fifa before he can feature for the Super Eagles.
