SUPER Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka has joined the leaders of the English Championship Coventry City on loan until the end of the season with a view towards making the move permanent in the summer.
Onyeka, 28, , joined English Premier League side Brentford from Danish club Midtjylland in what was the joint-highest sale ever by the former Danish Champions on July 20 2021. After a promising start, however, things have not gone according to plan for Onyeka as he has dropped down the pecking order at Brentford and is no longer a regular starter.
During the 2024/05 campaign, Onyeka was sent out on a season-long loan to Die Bundesliga side Augsburg and since his return several clubs have made enquiries about him. Now, Coventry, who are sitting on top of the table in the second tier of English football and are confident of getting promoted to the Premier League next season, have stepped in for Onyeka.
A tough-tackling anchorman, nicknamed The Tank, who is good at winning the ball in midfield, Onyeka has 41 international caps for Nigeria. Coventry City last played in the English Premier League in the 2000/01 season and are hoping that Onyeka, the deadline day signing will help see them over the line and back in the top flight again.
Transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano, said: “Frank Onyeka to Coventry City from Brentford, deal agreed between all parties and here we go. Loan with view to permanent move in the summer.”
So far this season, Onyeka has struggled for regular playing time with Brentford, only making nine appearances across all competitions for the London club. He had been linked with moves to Birmingham City, Sheffield United and Valencia but it appears that the lure of Premier League football is what made him opt for Coventry City.
