ENGLISH Premier League giants Leeds United have made enquiries about Nigerian defender Chibuike Nwaiwu with a view to signing him from Austrian Bundesliga club Wolfsberger during the forthcoming January transfer window.
Nwaiwu, 22, joined Wolfsberger from nine-time Nigeria Premier Football League champions Enyimba in January 2024 and has established himself in Austria ever since. A towering centreback who stands at six feet four inches tall, Nwaiwu contracted top Wolfsberger until 2027 but his good performances have caught the eye, meaning he could leave befire then.
Apart from Leeds, who beat the World Club Champions Chelsea, 3-1 in an English Premier League game last night, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayer Leverkusen are also said to both be looking at Nwaiwu. According to French news outlet, Top Mercato, Olympic Marseille are also interested in the player.
Making 11 appearances so far this season, Nwaiwu has earned rave reviews for his impressive performance at the club. He won the Austrian Cup with Wolfsberger last season and has kicked on from there during the current campaign.
With several Super Eagles centrebacks like William Ekong and Semi Ajayi now the wrong side of 30, Nwaiwu, could be a God-sent to head coach Eric Chelle. At 22, he would form a great partnership with the other young centrebacks like Benjamin Fredrick and Calvin Bassey.
